Experience liturgical catechesis while you learn!

June 24–27, 2001
Austin, Texas

While the 2001 Liturgical Catechesis Experience is now history, the conference schedule and workshop descriptions are posted here in the hope that you will look it over and let us know what you like most, least, and what you would want to have in the way of presentations at the NEXT "Experience," which we hope to have in 2003 or 2004. If you would indicate your interest in participating in, or possibly hosting the next Experience it would help us set the date and schedule. Just drop a quick email to Sue Espinosa, the ML events coordinator.

  • Acquire new tools to enrich your ministry.
  • Learn how liturgy and catechesis prepare the community for ministry in daily life.
  • Examine the social/ethical implications of our ritual actions.
Our baptism calls us to “full and active participation” at the same time the bishops of the world are asking us to move toward a more explicitly liturgical form of catechesis. At this exciting crossroads is an opportunity for true renewal.

Liturgical catechesis is not new; it is the process Jesus used. But many of us are new to doing it, having relied for a long time on classroom-oriented models.

The Liturgical Catechesis Experience actually models the liturgical catechesis process. We will celebrate liturgy, reflect on our experience and participate in the mystagogia of unpacking that experience. We will learn how to facilitate liturgical catechesis by doing it. It is an excellent introduction to liturgical catechesis as well as an enriching and satisfying experience for the seasoned catechist. The experiential focus is the reason the process works at all levels and why it is such an effective way of instructing our communities.

Combining the practical elements of a workshop with the prayerful attention of a guided retreat, the LCE is designed to refresh and renew catechists, liturgists and pastoral ministers.

Who Should Come

This conference is recommended for directors of religious education, liturgists, catechists, musicians, initiation/RCIA ministers, preachers and presiders. It will be especially helpful to all who are seeking an approach to catechesis that will turn young people and adults toward rather than away from their tradition. This conference is designed for those who are courageous enough to not only consider a new model, but to actually jump into the experience as a way of learning about it and evaluating it.

Testimonials

“The interaction among staff members and with participants and the emphasis on ‘social liturgy’ was inspiring and challenging.”
— 1999 Liturgical Catechesis Experience participant

“The Liturgical Catechesis Experience is all that it promises to be ... participants are drawn into a lived experience of liturgy and catechesis that can be creatively incorporated into existing parish programs. Anyone responsible for parish liturgy, catechetical programs or RCIA should invest in this event as a means of implementing the NCD and creating vision for the future of the church on the local level.”
— Janice Santanello, Archdiocese of Newark

“A superb blend of liturgical simplicity and catechetical wisdom (prowess) make this experience well worth the cost of a roundtrip airline ticket. The insights gleaned and the power of ritual explode in front of you through experience: from word, into and beyond space and time, then to action. Hats off to this marvelous team from ML.”
— Fr. Dave Glassmire, Lancaster, N.Y.
