“work” — as the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy tells us — “by
means of signs perceptible to the senses” (7). Love becomes, as 1 John
1:1 says, “what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and
touched with our hands, concerning the word of life.”

this issue, and let Robert Rivers remind you of the significance
of the anointing with that royal oil, chrism. If you are baptized into
Christ, you are anointed for service. Michael Mansfield issues a
rousing challenge for us to get on with Christ’s work. Are you up for it?
My article offers some ideas about why people in love make signs of that
love — and what happens if we don’t.
