COMMUNITY

by Gerard Scheuermann

As the days of summer come to an end, take time to gather in ways that "mix and match." Groups who may not normally work together should be encouraged to visit each other. Newcomers to the parish need to be introduced to the various ministries, many of which work behind the scenes and are often unknown or unrecognized.

One good method is to hold an autumn parish picnic and ministry fair. Along with games and music, have tables set up representing each of the parish ministries with information, pictures of activities, and members to meet and greet those interested in learning more. Award a prize to the "most inviting booth or table." Take steps to insure that the activities flow from the Sunday worship by inviting everyone present at liturgy in the weeks before the event. Be sure to announce the names of new parishioners and to welcome visitors. The choir can serenade with "secular" songs and the staff can distribute balloons. Make it intergenerational with everyone having a part. Make it festive, an atmosphere that says, "This is a parish that cares about being community".

"I come that you may have joy and have it to the fullest," say the Lord. Have joy together and all else will follow.
