SERVICE

by Rick Goodwin

Beginnings are marked by special days or celebrations. We celebrate birthdays, New Year's Day, and the beginnings of the seasons of the year. As a community of faith, the liturgical calendar always reminds us of our beginnings or initiation into the paschal mystery. By doing the work of the Gospel we transform the world. By reflecting on or savoring the mystery of our mission, we keep the memory of Christ alive in the community.

During the fall the community may commission its liturgical, catechetical and pastoral ministers. After liturgy, have each community reflect on what they have done, what the Gospel invites them to do and how they will live out the mission more concretely the following year. Keep these goals simple and attainable. Also keep in mind that these must be achieved by all age levels within the community. By touching others we touch Christ. By service to others we begin to experience that what we do in the liturgy is what we are invited to do in the world.
