SERVICE

by Gerard Scheuermann

The spirit of Advent and Christmas brings forth the need to give and to serve. Yet for the Christian, the call to service continues in the "ordinary time" as well. This year there are five Sundays between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday. The readings speak of discipleship and service. What a perfect time to call the parish groups to service to the wider community.

Gather the leaders or chairpersons of the parish organizations. Together brainstorm a set of five weekly service projects that the whole community can be involved in. Have the group create ways that every age level can contribute. The projects do not have to be complicated. They could be as simple as preparing "goodie" packages for hospitalized children. Small games and puzzles, note paper and pens, crayons, storybooks and even quarters for the vending machine could be included.

Everyone has a way to contribute. Little ones can decorate or adorn. Older children can assemble, carry, and greet. Teens are great at involving others and giving their energy, and adults can participate with their gifts, talents and treasures. All members of the parish can join in prayer support. Announce your intentions at the Christmas liturgies. Great things can be accomplished if the Spirit is allowed to freely move among you.
