COMMUNITY

by Rick Goodwin
The primary symbol of the season is the people — those preparing for baptism, those renewing baptism, and those preparing for reconciliation. In order to be purified and enlightened and to be led to a deeper communion in Christ, we do a 40-day penitential retreat. We all pray, fast, and do works of charity. We even abstain from meat products on certain days.

We do all this in relationship to Easter. The community celebrates together in its actions to show the world that sinners are redeemed and renewed by the paschal mystery. As one Body, one community in faith, we wear ashes, we wash in the waters of salvation, and we “put on Christ.” Pray the liturgy of the hours or the stations of the cross and reflect “why do we reject Satan?” Fast at a simple soup meal and reflect “why do we reject his works?” Finally, do acts of charity such as operation rice bowl and reflect “why do we reject his empty promises?”
