WORD

by Gerard Scheuermann
The lenten readings are rich in images of God’s great love. Sometimes, the penitential nature of Lent is overdone to the point of morbidity. Use the readings of Lent to help the community scrutinize their lives for the quiet presence of God. The rites of this season can also apply to the fully initiated because no one has “arrived” at salvation.

God is revealed in those who are present to us. Create a place where parishioners can post names and pictures of those who revealed God’s forgiveness, healing, power and faithfulness through their own lives. Keep it personal and tie it to the readings. Everyone has a grandparent, friend or neighbor who has made God real to them. Have families make an album of these “God-incidences,” times when circumstances revealed God’s presence in the midst of the ordinary. Present these stories of “passion” in some way on Passion/Palm Sunday as part of the procession. This is a way the word becomes flesh and dwells among us.
