See more evil?

Dear Editor,

I would like to comment on the "Bulletin Inserts" regarding confession before communion by Paul Turner in the March edition of ML (24:2). In the list of "intrinsically evil" actions, things like trafficking in women and children, deportation are rightfully mentioned. But some of these actions are so rare that listing them as a "confession aid" is not helpful. On the other hand, adultery and fornication are not mentioned. Are these actions no longer intrinsically evil? Are you not by silence supporting the prevailing attitude that premarital sex is okay in some situations, or that receiving the Eucharist in a second invalid marriage is permissible? Are you reluctant to mention these things head on? After all, you did restrict the list to actions, not subjective dispositions. I hope you do not reflect the "liberal" position that these actions are not intrinsically evil.

Paul Turner responds:

Thank you for comments.

I drew the list of intrinsic evils from GAUDIUM ET SPES #27. Pope John Paul II included the same list in his treatment of the theme in VERITATIS SPLENDOR #80. I decided to give examples from these sources, not a comprehensive list.

Insert questions

Dear Editor,

I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoy Paul Turner's "Bulletin Inserts" in MODERN LITURGY. We have a regular page in our bulletin for the articles. Education is so important and so many don't take advantage of it; we take pride in making that a priority in our parish. Do you have a collection of the "Bulletin Inserts" published? I find them very helpful to start discussions that break down some of the old mindsets. In particular, have you done anything on the Eucharistic Prayer, or the Rosary (specifically, that Mass is not the time to be praying it!). Thanks; we appreciate all Paul Turner's hard work and insight.

WE WILL BE PUBLISHING A COLLECTION OF THE "BULLETIN INSERTS" IN THE FALL. THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE IN BOTH BOOK AND DISKETTE FORMAT.

PAUL TURNER HAS WRITTEN TWO INSERTS ON EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS. HE TREATED PRAYER IV IN ML 21:5 AND PRAYER II IN ML 22:5. HE PROMISES TO WRITE ONE SOON TO DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM PRAYING THE ROSARY DURING MASS. WATCH FOR IT IN A FUTURE ISSUE.

Dear Editor,

I enjoy the "Bulletin Inserts" published in ML and was wondering if you ever covered the topic of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament? There is a core of people here trying to get a weekly adoration going, and most of the comments I get from parishioners are "What's adoration all about? What's different from praying before the tabernacle?"
