Inside ML

Join us in Phoenix

ML will be at the Southwest Liturgical Conference study week in Phoenix, Jan. 7-10. ML's music editor, John Hajda, and I will be presenting a workshop on Lay Presiding. We intend to draw heavily from Michael Begolly's new book Leading the Assembly at Prayer: A Practical Guide for Lay and Ordained Presiders (Resource Publications, Inc., 1997). Begolly is the director of worship for the diocese of Greensburg, Penn., and an excerpt from his book appears on page 9 (in the printed publication).
Kevin Yell will also be in Phoenix, presenting a workshop on liturgical environment. From July 15-18, Yell will be directing a festival of liturgical arts sponsored by ML. Watch for further details.
Tim and Julie Smith, composers of the new I Will Sing/Cantare collection (Resource Publications, Inc., 1997), are based in Phoenix. They will be performing in concert on Jan. 7 with Bob Hurd and several other musicians. The concert is co-sponsored by RPI and OCP.
Nathan Mitchell will be at the study week. Mitchell is speaking on the topic of liturgy as prophesy. You can get a foretaste of what he will have to say by reading the interview that begins on page 4.

Welcome

ML has many new faces to welcome this month. First is Karen Barta, who begins the new liturgical year by taking over the Year of Luke series (page 24). Barta is an associate professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Seattle University. She is also in the middle of writing Retelling the Christmas Story: The Spirituality of the Birth Narratives, which will soon be published by Resource Publications, Inc.
We also have two new people in the sales and customer service department: Rick Goodwin, a catechist and workshop presenter formerly of Orange, Calif., and Wanda Scheuermann, also a catechist, just pulled up from Gulfport, Miss.
Wanda's husband, Gerard Scheuermann, is also coming on board. Gerard (yet another catechist) will have the most direct contact with ML in his role as assistant to the editorial department.

Thank you

I'd like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Mary Ann Getty, who authored ML's Year of Luke, Year of Matthew and Year of Mark columns during the last three years. Mary Ann provided readers with solid insight into the liturgical and exegetical background of Gospels. Her thoughts have been a helpful resource to many readers, and I am grateful for her contributions to ML.

Visual Arts Awards

It's not too early to start thinking about your entries for the annual Visual Arts Awards contest. The contest is growing every year, both in quantity and quality of entries. Entry forms will be mailed to all subscribers with the March issue or you can send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to receive one sooner. Send requests to ML, Visual Arts Awards, 160 E. Virginia St. #290, San Jose, CA 95112. Also, see the ad on page 24 (in the printed publication) for more information.

Corrections

God's Spirit with Us, installed in St. Raphael Church in Naperville, Ill., won an honorable mention in this year's Visual Arts Awards. Regrettably, the photo of the window was printed upside down in the November issue (ML 24:9). The correct orientation appears at right (in the printed publication).
In the same feature, the captions were reversed for the Saints of the Old and New Testament window and The Sacred Garden window.
