Inside ML

A house for the church

You will notice an emphasis on architectural issues in this month's ML. The document Art and Environment in Catholic Worship considers the issue of where we worship to be of primary importance:
The congregation, its liturgical action, the furniture and the other objects it needs for liturgical action -- these indicate the necessity of a space, a place, a hall, or a building for the liturgy. It will be a place fro praying and singing, for listening and speaking -- a place for human interaction and active participation -- where the mysteries of God are recalled and celebrated in human history.
The role of the architect in creating such a space is crucial. Lynn Ellen Doxon gives us some ideas on how to find a person with the right gifts (page 6). One question that often receives too little attention in the design of worship spaces is, "Can people see?" Poor lighting will inhibit good sight and good participation. Dan Young steers us through some of the issues involved in lighting the worship space (page 12). And the recently constructed St. Vincent de Paul Church demonstrates some of the best qualities of a beautiful worship space (page 4).

More changes

ML is undergoing a few changes during this 25th anniversary year. One of the sadder ones is we are saying goodbye to a long-time friend. The Lector Workshop, authored by Anne Bannon, is going into a hiatus. Anne's final column appears on page 32 of this issue. But you can still reach her by e-mail at witlady@aol.com. We are grateful for Anne's solid contribution to ML over the last several years.
We are also bidding farewell to the Web Watch column, the last of which appeared in the April issue (ML 24:3). Thanks to Scott Fitzgerald for all his work.
Three other regular ML departments are being revived. Home Church began last month (ML 24:3) and appears in this issue on page 28. Choreographing the Catechumenate makes it's reappearance in this issue on page 34. And the Planning Checklist will reappear in the June/July issue (ML 24:5).

Correction

In the March issue (ML 24:2), we misspelled the name of one of our reviewers. It should have read Jeannette Oliver. ML regrets the error.
