Making a difference
This issue of ML asks a simple but difficult question of liturgical musicians:
Does what you do make a difference in the world? Ellen Oak believes it
does. In her article that begins on page 4, she asks liturgical musician to
set out a mission for themselves and to evaluate that mission based on how
their work affects those they serve. Oak says, "If we take seriously the
notion that the eucharistic assembly is the Body of Christ gathered to do the
work of salvation in love for the world, then it follows that the sounds the
assembly makes are nothing less than the sounds of Christ, indeed the very
voice of God, in our midst."
We could perhaps do better with our understanding of the assembly as the Body
of Christ. We could strive to more fully implement the Second Vatican
Council's mandate for full, conscious and active participation. We could
struggle to reach the place where our work, our performance of the liturgy,
does make a difference in the world. Following the goals Oak sets out in her
article would be a good start.
New and old departments
Liturgical Lil makes her debut in this issue. Lillian Hamiliton
is the pen name for a member of the faithful who takes on some of the more
head-scratching imponderables of what it means to live the Catholic life. Look
for Lil's reflections starting on page 32. Also notice that the Planning
Checklist (page 26) makes it's return with a new author. Donna Cole,
author of Liturgical Ministry: A Practical Guide to Spirituality (RPI,
1996), tells you what to look for in the coming season.
Best New Music
Do you dread sorting through all the new music that is published each year?
Diana Kaulback, author of Musical Liturgy in ML's Planning Guide, feels your
pain. She's distilled the choices down to a few of the very best new pieces.
See her comments on page 37 of the print edition of ML.
