Inside ML

What’s in a name?

Have you seen ML lately? The September issue is mailed to all the parishes in the United States, so some of you may be reading ML for the first time in a while. The most obvious thing you’ll find new is the name. By calling the magazine Ministry & Liturgy (formerly Modern Liturgy), the editors are attempting to make more clear the understanding that all the ministries in the parish can be made stronger when the liturgy is made stronger. The content of ML has always reflected that notion. The new name better reflects on the outside what readers have come to expect on the inside.

For example, if you are a catechist or DRE, you will find help for your ministry every month with Karen Barta’s Year of Matthew column (page 36 in the printed edition) and Kay Murdy’s reflections on the Sunday readings in the “Liturgical Spirituality” section of the Planning Guide (page 30). Catholic school teachers may want to look at the Planning Checklist (page 25) for ideas on planning your classroom schedule or the “Musical Liturgy” section of the Planning Guide (page 33) for ideas for your next school Mass. Youth ministers, perhaps more than any other parish ministers, must increasingly deal with issues of multiculturalism. If that’s your situation, be sure not to miss Peggy Lovrien’s reflections on “Inculturation and Multiculturalism in the American Church” (page 12). Myrna Rios-Forestiere’s “Balancing Gospel Values and Business Practices” (page 20) is a must-read for parish administrators. Susan Walker has a word to say to liturgists about leadership in “Leadership Issues for Liturgists” (page 16), which is the second article in a three-part series. Last month ML looked at leadership issues for pastors; next month the focus will be on leadership issues for catechists.

These are examples of what is available in just one issue of ML. Over the course of a year, ML provides a wide range of practical, sound advice for all the various ministries of the parish. If you have ideas, suggestions or comments about how ML can be more helpful to you in your ministry, please send them to me at ML, 160 E. Virginia St. #290, San Jose, CA 95112.
