| Building the Triduum to build faith
What will your Triduum be like this year? The power of a well-celebrated
Triduum is difficult to overestimate. The damage done by a poorly celebrated
one is equally difficult to over estimate. The U.S. Bishops said in their
1972 document Music in Catholic Worship, “Faith grows when it is well expressed
in celebration. Good celebrations foster and nourish faith. Poor celebrations
may weaken and destroy it” (6). If this is true on a given Sunday, how
much more is it true during the Triduum? In the celebration of the Triduum
we bring all we believe to the fore in one grand explosion of worship and
praise. Celebratory styles vary from community to community, but if one
exhortation could remain constant in each, it would be to carefully consider
the question: What will your Triduum be like this year? Mulling and musing
on the answer, with prayerful attention to all the liturgical and catechetical
facets of those three days, is essential for building a Triduum that grows
faith.
Once you know what you want your Triduum to be like this year, see Donna
Cole’s article, “Ten Steps to a Better Triduum” (page 10 in the printed
edition of ML), for some practical suggestions on how toget there.
