Thanks be to God
“The [Second Vatican] Council brought us to see that the church consists
of all who are baptized,” wrote Father Richard McBrien recently in his
syndicated column. McBrien noted that those born after 1955 have no memory
of the pre-Vatican II church. McBrien recalled that the 1985 world synod
of bishops, convened by Pope John Paul II, called the council an unmistakable
work of the Holy Spirit. He quoted John Paul II’s Tertio Millenio Adveniente
as saying “the best preparation for the new millennium” is “a renewed commitment
to apply, as faithfully as possible, the teachings of Vatican II to the
life of every individual and of the whole church.”
