Divorced and remarried

“Given today’s divorce and remarriage statistics,” says Susan Walker, “welcoming remarried couples is an important element of parish hospitality” (page 16ff). Yet it is often a neglected part of parish pastoral ministry. The number of divorced people has more than quadrupled, from 4.3 million in 1970 to 18.3 million in 1996. Those numbers are proportionally represented in Catholic families, which means that almost no one in our parishes is untouched by divorce. And it is inevitable that many divorced Catholics are going to remarry. The issues of divorce and remarriage among Catholic families are difficult to deal with for some pastoral ministers. Nevertheless, faith-filled people in our parishes are suffering and our lack of attention to them adds to their suffering. See Walker’s article for some suggestions on reaching out.

Liturgical Catechesis Convention

There is still time to sign up for the Liturgical Catechesis Convention in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 19–21. We plan to have two sets of tracks. The liturgical tracks will work all day Saturday to create a liturgy which we will celebrate on Sunday. The catechetical tracks will work all day Saturday to create a mystagogical catechesis that will flow from the liturgy we celebrate. Richard Fragomeni and Kathy Brown are the keynote speakers. See page 47 for more details or visit www.rpinet.com.

Visual Arts Awards

It’s not too soon to start thinking about entering the 2002–2003 Visual Arts Awards contest. The winners in the Permanent category of the current year’s contest appeared in the September issue. Other winners will be highlighted in the November, February and April issues. The April issue will feature a new category — Devotional Art.

Correction

In the August (28:6) issue, liturgical artist George Hoezleman’s name was misspelled. ML regrets the error.ML
