| Interpreting
the documents
Dear Editor,
[In regard to the
article “The Law of Liturgy: Interpretation and Implementation of Liturgical
Documents,” found in ML 29:4 and also posted on the web at www.rpinet.com/ml/2904lawl.html]:
Excellent. Should
be in the hands of all the bishops and priests in the United States. Organized
and documented and easy to follow and understand. Great job!

Pesky
canon law
Dear Editor,
I read with interest
Paul Turner’s article on outdoor weddings (“Outdoor Weddings: How to Respond”
[ML 29:2]). Thirty-one years ago my husband and I were married in an outdoor
wedding in a beautiful “forest cathedral” in Oregon at a ceremony concelebrated
by three priests. We had just returned from living and working in Alaska
for two years as lay volunteers and had not as yet been able to establish
ourselves in a local parish community.
The church is not
a building. It is the people of God and God is most present to us in the
people and in the beauty of nature. (St. Bonaventure was said to have called
“the book of nature” the primary sacred text.)
It was a wedding
that those present have never forgotten and I thank God that the “pesky
Canon 1118” did not prevent us from the beautiful ceremony that we all
shared. Maybe it is time to amend Canon 1118.
