“God-Size-It”
I recently visited
Yosemite National Park for the first time. I was transfixed by the scale
of the natural wonders of Yosemite. Everything was “God-Sized”! Following
a wet winter and spring, the waterfalls were magnificent, the enormous
rock formations glistened in the spray and the giant trees seemed to shake
hands with the heaven … truly a canvas of God’s artwork.
This issue of ML
features the work of some of our talented artists, whose vision and skill
are gifts to us all. We are pleased to present the winners in the Permanent
Category of this year’s Visual Arts Awards, and we give thanks for all
artists who are dedicating themselves to the work of the church.
This issue of ML
also includes the visionary work of other prophetic and gifted people:
-
Sister Joyce Ann
Zimmerman takes us on a journey of discovery through the history of
the Liturgy of the Hours.
-
Todd Flowerday
considers the place of chant, an ancient form of sung prayer in the church,
while David Haas looks to the future of liturgical music in the
United States.
-
Laurice Bonannella
shares a hopeful look at the way parents and children can be formed in
the understanding of the experience of sacrament in reconciliation.
We will continue our
commitment to support and sustain the vision. The following is a sample
of what you may look forward to in future issues of ML:
-
David Haas and
Terry Piontkowski will offer unique insights on the responsibility
of music ministry in challenging times.
-
David Philippart
and Nancy Chinn will furnish their perspectives on different aspects
of liturgical environment.
-
Ricky Manalo
and Gail Morris will present ways to prepare a powerful Triduum.
-
Veteran writer Paul
Turner will provide commentary and insight into the recent ritual revisions.
The regular and feature
writers of ML and our staff reveal a clear vision of mission. We need this
sense of vision. In a culture where we’re told that bigger is always better,
there is constant pressure to “Super-Size-It” in everything from cars to
houses to fast food meals. It’s time to reassess what matters, to reconsider
what we value. In ML, we study the past, consider the present and determine
how we will live the future even as we stand in wonder in the presence
of the living God. Let’s stop “Super-Sizing-It” and start “God-Sizing-It.”
