2006 Visual Arts Awards:
Sacred Symbols & Architecture

Best of Show

St. Croix Lutheran High School Chapel
West St. Paul, Minn.
Architect: Kodet Architectural Group, Ltd. (www.kodet.com)
6,400 square feet; copper walls
Three prominent curved walls represent the Trinity. The chapel seats more than 500 and allows for a variety of arrangements responding to dynamic needs. Also features antiphonal seating for worship. Each side wall window is angled, as are the coffers above the space frame, to direct and control sound. To help absorb unnecessary reverberation, padding is placed behind the curved copper walls. Copper was selected as it will change appearance over time, representing life's changes.

For more information on this work, and to see photographs of the three other winning entries and four honorable mentions, please refer to the printed edition. ML
