Honorable Mention
Altar and Communion Rails
Altar is 48" L x 42" W x
36" H. Approximately 4000 mosaic tiles are inlaid on the faces and 5 white
marble squares are inlaid on the top of the altar. The white Carrara marble
is salvaged from the original baptismal font. Each piece is 3" x 3" x 7/8".
Mosaic inlays on the legs and faces closely match the inlays in the original
marble high altar. The inlays are composed of 10mm tessarae of Carerra,
Calcutta, and Laguna Verde marble and gold-leafed glass imported from Italy.
The communion rails are of white oak, stained and varnished, with fabric
kneeling cushions. Each of the four arched section measures 18 3/4 " W
x 21" H. Steel pins 5/8" x 8" anchor the railings.

The design of the altar table
is based on the classical proportions of the original high altar. It is
made from old-growth Douglas Fir floor joists that were removed from the
church basement to make way for new earthquake resistant concrete footings.
Mosaic inlays on the legs and faces of the altar table are a close match
to the inlays in the original marble altar.
The design of the communions
rails is inspired by the quatrefoil and arched patterns of existing paneling
and railings in the church. The railings are removable.
