Are You Prepared to Respond
to People in Crisis?
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov.1, 2005 — The death of a spouse, the loss of a
job, a serious illness — all these events can propel a person into a state
of crisis. It is also true that the loss of a pastor, the closing of a
parish, or a natural disaster can throw an entire parish community into
a state of crisis. Dr. Roslyn Karaban, PhD, addresses all of these issues
in her newly released book, Crisis Caring: A Guide for Ministering to
People in Crisis. Dr. Karaban emphasizes that “crisis caring involves
the care of the whole community of faith, not just individual members.”
This book is a guide to the ministry of crisis counseling for both community
and individual settings. Methods and strategies are presented and then
demonstrated in vignettes of specific cases to illustrate the methodology.
Also included are guidelines for assessment, intervention, and referral
and a list of additional sources.
“Pastoral caregivers and ministry students will find Roslyn Karaban’s
insightful and practical book a sure guide to effective ministry in times
of crisis. This lucid study of ‘crisis caring’ displays mastery of the
art of teaching basic pastoral care to theology students and lay practitioners
. The true-to-life cases of suicide, loss and death, violence, and community
disaster movingly reveal how Karaban’s faith-based ‘CARING’ model of crisis
intervention illumines Christian ministry.” — Charles J. Scalise, professor,
Fuller Theological Seminary
Roslyn A. Karaban, PhD, is a tenured professor of ministry studies at
St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester, New York, and
is certified in thanatology. She received a Master of Divinity degree from
Harvard Divinity School and a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in
Berkeley, California. She is the author of numerous articles and books,
including Responding to God’s Call and Complicated Losses, Difficult
Deaths, and she is the editor of Extraordinary Preaching, all
from Resource Publications. She is married and has two teenage children.
