Chapel screen in Harlem wins top prize in ML’s 2002 Visual Arts Awards

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 5, 2002 — Ministry & Liturgy (ML) magazine today announced the Visual Arts Awards 2002-2003 Best of Show winner for the Permanent category.

Lawrence R. Hoy and Peter C. Scurlock, both of Renovata Studios, Port Chester, NY have been selected as the Best of Show winner for their work entitled, Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Their entry is found in a predominantly African-American parish, St. Joseph of the Holy Family, in Harlem. Resulting from the parish’s desire to celebrate their rich African culture and history, the architectural screen is in the Yoruba tribe tradition. The screen is closed during Mass and then opened afterward for private spiritual devotion thereby creating a separate chapel in the former altar area.

The screen will be featured on the 2002 September cover of Ministry & Liturgy magazine and the winners will receive $100 (cash). Winners of the BENE and Honorable Mention awards will also be featured inside the issue.

Winners of The Annual Ministry & Liturgy Visual Arts Awards Competition are judged on artistic and liturgical merit. Each of the three judges score the pieces in those two categories on a scale from 1-10. The total score can be no higher than 60 points and the highest score receives the prestigious Best of Show award. Typically, there are three to four winners each for the BENE award and the Honorable Mention award.

This year’s Visual Arts Awards judges were Sheila McLaughlin, Martin Marklin, and Bro. Michael O’Neill McGrath.

The next winners to be announced will be in the Stained Glass category. They will be featured in the November 2002 issue of  Ministry & Liturgy.
