New anthology stresses impact of art on worship

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 6, 2002 — Dancing, sensuality, Princess Diana’s funeral, and a Hugh Grant movie. What do these things have in common? They are all discussed in the context of art and religion in a new anthology to be released in the spring by Resource Publications, Inc.

The book, Postmodern Worship & the Arts, discusses how art in various forms helps “a church grow through worship that draws in all ages, all races, and all classes,” say editors Doug Adams and Michael Moynahan.

“The arts encourage people of different viewpoints to gather together in worship of God…, communicate to all our senses and make worship and preaching memorable in an age when the majority of the population remembers primarily by what they see,” the editors explain.

Eighteen authors who are experts in their respective fields each contributed an article to the book. The authors include scholars, university professors, theologians, published authors, a musician, and a dancer. Some of the topics included in the book are: drama and biblical humor, liturgical dance, liturgical music, the paintings of Anselm Kiefer, the Confucian art of li, sensual liturgy and Hispanic worship, funeral liturgy, and cultural diversity in liturgical planning.

The book was written partly to honor Jesuit priest James L. Empereur, former chair of the doctoral faculty in worship and the arts at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Empereur, now based in Texas, contributed the final chapter in the book. The rest of the authors have either been his students, colleagues or collaborators.
