New Magazine to Help Schools Improve Learning Environment.Resource Publications, Inc., has launched Safe Learning, a magazine designed to help K-12 administrators create safe learning environments for their students. The premiere issue (January/February 2001) was mailed out on 11 January 2001 to over 100,000 K-12 schools in the United States, said Susan Mancuso, the magazine's publisher. She plans to publish ten issues during each school year."Despite recent publicity, statistics show that schools are safe places - and they're getting safer, " said Kenneth Guentert, Safe Learning editor. "Nevertheless, safety is a core issue for administrators. Every day they take responsibility for the well-being of hundreds of young people. They need to make sure those students get back home in one piece - without being shot at, bullied, abused, injured, or made ill. And if something does go wrong, they have to know what to do." Safe Learning is edited principally for administrators, Guentert said. "To create a safe learning environment, you have to involve everyone - teachers, support staff, coaches, students, parents, and the community. But it's the administrators - the principals and the deans - who have to get everyone on board. They are the managers of the process." He said the magazine will stress the positive. "We will be dealing with dark issues: violence, harassment, drug abuse, suicide, natural disasters, and so on. But the overall goal is to create a climate that will make learning easier and enjoyable. We are going to keep our eyes on the goal. We also think that addressing these issues can be integrated into the learning process. It is not a sideshow. We noticed that a number of schools have built the idea of creating a 'safe and supportive learning environment' into their mission statements. That impressed us. In fact, that's where we found our name." Contributors will come from many different disciplines, Guentert said. "These issues are complex and need to be approached from many different points of view. We will be including the voices of those within the school system - administrators, counselors, teachers, and students. We will also reach beyond the school to experts in management, architecture and design, engineering, health, the social sciences, government, law enforcement, and the arts."
