to “church’s best-kept secret.” The social teachings of the Catholic church are widely respected, but they remain unknown to many Catholics. “They are often called ‘our best-kept secret,’” says Janet I. Miller, a formation catechist and author of Catechizing for Justice, a new program designed to promote the church’s social mission. “The tradition is very rich. We need make it accessible to people so that it can empower them for action.” Her new book includes six chapters, each one covering a basic social teaching: human dignity, structural sin, the reign of God, stewardship, globalization, and solidarity. Chapters draw on church documents for background and use handouts, discussion, and worksheets to involve the participants. This work also includes background material for the catechist, sample forms, a bibliography, a resource list, and suggested strategies for making the process more effective. Janet I. Miller is a catechetical consultant and a ministry formation catechist for the Diocese of Fresno, California. Previously she taught in junior high school and served as a parish liturgist and Catechumenate director. She received her teaching credential from California Polytechnic Institute and her master’s degree in catechesis from Santa Clara University. She is married and the mother of four children.
