Gloria

by Marion Eagen

The Gloria or “Glory to God,” a hymn of praise to the Trinity, is part of the introductory rites on Sundays and special feasts except during Advent and Lent.
Though it has never been a part of the eucharistic liturgy in Eastern churches, it came to Rome from the Byzantine liturgy of the hours.
The Gloria made its first appearance in the Western church in the sixth century and only during Masses at which a bishop presided. This episcopal connection died out by the end of the eleventh century.
Because it is a hymn, the Gloria should be sung, but some congregations choose to recite it on ordinary Sundays and sing it during more festive times.
