Since 1974, this reference work has covered all recorded Christian music, including albums, cassettes, CD-ROMs and videos, as well as accompaniment tracks. One of the unique values of this volume is that it includes out-of-print music, allowing users to search out another version of the song they are looking for. A song is listed in the directory once for each recorded version released since 1974. If a song is no longer available, that fact is noted. The Recorded Music volume also makes it easy to see several collections by a given artist. Another unique benefit is that it shows all the songs on each collection, enabling users to find an album if they know just one of the songs on it. With more than 275,000 songs listed, the cross-referenced indexes have made this book a favorite sales tool in music stores around the world.

As of January 2002, this work has been replaced by quarterly updates in the form of an electronic reference called The Christian Music Finder.
