Matthew told the story of Jesus for a community divided on the value of the
past, on directions for the future and on the relative importance of different
doctrines. Faced with divisiveness in Christianity today,
we can refocus on Matthew and his proclamation for the 80s and
90s; learn his skill in discernment and integration; and imitate his
empathy and ability to make the message and its spiritual challenge
accessible to all.
Review
Sound spirituality that issues directly from a most important source of
Christian living, the New Testament, is always needed. When it also
addresses the contemporary historical context, it is truly a blessing. These
books speak to everyone who is in touch with life and with Christ as we find
him in the New Testament and as we find him living in the church
today.
Eugene LaVerdiere, author, The New Testament in the Life
of the Church
