The Peer Helper's Pocketbook is a quick and easy guide written for peer helpers/counselors in junior high school, high school and college. Everything needed for effective peer support is here: a review of basic communication skills, counseling tips, a synopsis of information on issues and a section for important referral telephone numbers — for those times when more help is indicated. Put a copy in the faculty room — it is a handy reference for faculty, counselors and parents.

The Peer Counselor's Pocketbook, now out of print, contained the same basic information as The Peer Helper's Pocketbook. It was the original edition, which was written by consultant Joan Sturkie and peer counselor Valerie Gibson for those involved in peer counseling programs (ISBN: 0-89390-162-8).

 About the Authors

Joan Sturkie is a nationally recognized author and peer counseling consultant. She is a former high school counselor and peer counseling teacher. Her other books include Listening with Love: True Stories from Peer Counseling (which has a companion teacher's guide), Christian Peer Counseling: Love in Action, coauthored with Gordon Bear and The Peer Counselor's Pocket Book, coauthored with Valerie Gibson. She is a popular motivational speaker for conventions, workshops and parents' groups.

Valerie Gibson, a former student of Sturkie's, has a degree in urban studies. She received the Outstanding Peer Counselor of the Year Award when she was a high-school senior. Her experience in working with today's young people has given her a keen insight into their needs. She is also the recipient of the 1985 Essertier Creative Writing Award.
