I was listening to some recordings from the CMAA Colloquium of 2010 this week (http://music.dierschow.com/2010Colloquium/) and came across some lectures by Fr. Kirby that were recommended to me by a friend.
In one of them, Fr. Kirby says that chant is only beautiful when it's sung in a state of grace.
This brings me to a problem the church is clearly facing: homosexuality in the ranks of musicians.
There is an abundance of homosexuals taking over every aspect of Catholic (and other denomination) music. The problem with this is that many of these men and women are actively living out these lifestyles, having sexual relations outside of marriage and against the laws of God.
Just to clarify- this is not an argument against homosexuals. If they're living a chaste lifestyle, going to confession regularly (just as everyone should) and working as a church musician, I have no problem with it. If it were an epidemic that many straight music directors were living with partners in an unmarried state, I'd go after them too.
We need to realize that chastity is a virtue.
We need to realize that a song is more beautifully sung when sung in a state of grace.
We need to realize that beyond the words we sing, we have to live the ideas behind them.
We all know very, very talented homosexuals who work in church music, I'm sure. We all also know that they are living a very immoral lifestyle. We need to pray for them. We need to pray that Blessed Mary, ever-virgin, intercede for them and give them strength to abstain from their ways and repent their past sins through sacramental confession. We need to start talking about virgins again - and not in a joking way like that 40 Year Old Virgin movie - but in a way that promotes it as a lifestyle that is healthy and normal.
Ora pro nobis.

I'm not spreading hate, Anne.
God's laws apply to all people.
Just recently in my own life, I found myself in a state of sin and was committing the same sin again and again. I resolved myself to go to sacramental confession, repent and go forth without that sin hindering me in my ministry. It is only my prayer that others can do the same. I'm not perfect, nor do I claim to be. However, I share my experiences in hopes that others will do the same. My liturgical music has improved - the month or so that I was stuck in a state of sin, I knew my music was suffering.
Homosexuals will become better musicians when chaste.
Although we can appreciate your prayers for others, it is important to recognize that your sin was affecting your ability to perform your music ministry tasks. However, a gay musician might be happy with where they are and will have no bearing on their music abilities as a church musician. Two different concepts.
Peace,
Ron

PS4,
I was at colloquium but cannot confirm that the context in which you cite Fr. Kirby was slanted in such a way as to warrant such an unnecessary and provocative post. We need only pray for one another and the Church at the end of the day, yes?
Back into the shell.
