Just had a visit from the priest and a few deacons of a nearby Coptic Orthodox Church ( Ethiopian ), not sure if that is the correct terminology.
But they want to borrow our sanctuary for their Easter Vigil, 6 PM to 2 AM, Holy Saturday ! and oh yeah, can they use the Fellowship Hall for their traditional "Break the Fast Feast " ? at 2 AM ???????
Their only concern was space. We can seat 300 comfortably, add chairs you can get 350- 380. Well, that might be tight for them, but it would work !
All I could say to the priest was " WOW ! " Welcome, and double up on the incense.
Darn sure they're not limiting their readings to the obligatory 3 + Epistle + Gospel. Would that we weren't either.

Gee...even if they did all 9 readings, all responses and all verses, maybe 3 hours at the most. What else are they doing?
Randy, it's going to be your job to attend and report back with a time-line!
Peace,
Ron

Same here Gabby...Our pastor will only let us hear the obligatory three. This Coptic group is most likely baptizing quite a few.

There's quite an Ethiopian/Eritrean/Habesha(n) community in our area. That local church is Miaphysite (which would have been erroneously referred to as Monophysite in the past, but one of the most productive areas of ecumenism has involved the Oriental Churches (the Coptic, Syrian, Chaldean, Maronite and Armenian Churches, as opposed to the Orthodox Churches that trace their heritage to the Byzantine/Greek heritage)).

Requesting from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. doesn't mean the Vigil will last that long. From 6 on they will be setting things up. If they don't start until after full dark, ~9 p.m., read all the readings, baptize several, it could easily be 4-5 hours. Doesn't their regular Divine Liturgy last something like 3 hours?

8 AM to about 12 noon. And for the Vigil, they fast all day Holy Saturday. So their meal at 2 AM Easter Sunday is a true break fast. They are evidently very strict about no food before communion.
Sure wish I could be there for that Vigil. I'd love to have our parishioners who complain about all the readings attend this one.

I know of a few parishes with long Vigils that take a break at some point in the liturgy. People go outside for some air, restrooms etc. Some people leave at this point. At least those who leave have an experience of the Vigil. I feel sad for practicing Catholics who have never come for this beautiful night. I missed last year because of an emergency at home and felt horrible.

Ours went the longest it's ever gone this year at 5 hours 30 minutes. Luckily I had a student playing the first two Masses and I have a cot in my office. If we have 40 baptisms again next year (God willing), I think we have to move up our traditional 11PM start-time.
