I too have heard many versions of the meaning of this story. But the priests reaction that the meaning may have been lost in translation may also be valid. Language is a living thing and I am sure that you can remember terms that meant one thing when you were a child and have a totally different meaning now a days. For instance 40 years ago "gay" meant you felt happy.
So over a 2,000 year time span the manner of phrasing words may have altered the meaning somewhat. Not to mention cultural changes and several language translations. And who knows what family dynamics were going on. Perhaps Mary sensed Jesus had some ambivelance about leaving her (a widow) and starting His public life.
Perhaps at that time it was considered inappropriate to leave a widowed mother to fend for herself and so it was important to note that Mary encouraged Him to begin.
Whatever the family dynamics and exact words were, we know that Mary asked and Jesus responded. And the moment had to be bittersweet, for the mother child dynamic would now be forever altered. ANd I see Jesus words as a reflection of the tremendous change their relationship would now take. My perception is less that this was a rebuke and more a question of wether or not Mary understood that things would never be the same once this first step was taken.
