: The priesthood, more than anything, suffers from extremely poor management. ; however, there is a lot to be said for receiving feedback from your boss about your performance. How about annual performance reviews? How about being mentored? Excellent idea, maybe this is done in the Roman system, I'm not sure. But I know in my area, my pastor, who is seasoned and senior (41 years of ministry) mentors the newly assigned and/or ordained in our area. Both the neophyte and us as a parish benefit from it. Basic practice in most professions, really! I spent my first 3 years as a Social Worker being supervised (closely, in addition to having to be in therapy myself before I could therapize :), first weekly, then monthly! How about scheduled meetings with peers to exchange ideas or concerns? Again, a good arrangment, our clergy/lay ministers meet in pericope study each week. : Where is their support from their higher ups? This we all suffer from, seems the pastor of the Pastors has minimal contact, but are more like fire jumpers, going from blaze to blaze. :I could guarantee you that the bishops could increase their credibility not only in the public eye, but in the eyes of their priests, simply by getting up and showing some real anger over the priests who have abused others. I've wondered about this, where is the complete outrage? Watching David Vance "Our Fathers" author, if the latest figures are true, or even half true, it ia truly a very dark mark on Christianity, one that will be with us for 100's of years. It could make the Reformation look like a slight disagreement! But again, where is the anger and outrage. Dang it i know I mad at what this has doen to countless thousands of victims. : Regarding the sex abuse, the celibacy rule is so irrelevant as to be a non-issue. Agreed, anyone with a minimal amount of knowledge of sexual issues would concede this. : The priesthood is fine. It's the management of the priesthood that needs the overhaul. Agreed again. As a side note, I just finished reading "To Sleep with the Angels" Cowan/Kuenster, the story of teh Our Lady of Angels fire in 1958. What is frightening is the similarities in the way the hierarchy handled this horrible event, quite similar to this handling of the abuse. Circle the wagons, forget the victims, protect the Church! And the vivil government went along with it then, and seems to be going along with it now. Frightening. One question Donna, as I respect your take and presentation on things here on the boards. How this abuse scandel is being "managed" here, how much is dictated by the American Conference of Bishops and how much is being dictated by Rome?
