Unfortunately, the anticipated response to this will be to point out that the majority of abuse victims were over the age of 12 and out of the age range used to define pedophilia. This is true.
What makes it unfortunate is that the assumption then is made that someone at the age of 15, 16, or even 17 is of an age to make a conscious, willful decision to engage in sexual activity with an adult which renders the term "abuse" questionable. It is inferred that the "victim" is not really a victim at all, but a homosexual in their own right exploring their own sexuality.
Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not questionable nor debatable. A person in their mid-teens - even late teens - is still in a position of vulnerability when faced with an authoritative adult who not only has the respect of the teen's immediate community, but also the respect and confidence of their immediate family. Combined with the turmoil in all other areas that teenagers experience, it is this vulnerability the abuser chooses to exploit. It is the "they must have wanted it" mentality that the abuser seizes upon to manipulate their victims into silence.
It would be better to drop the term pedophilia altogether and simply call the abuser for what he/she is - a sexual predator.
