I could have very easily gone the way of others and given up. I knew that I really had to pull myself together and get on with my life. Couldn't just wallow in self-pity.

So I've moved on. Managed to finish all schooling, including post-graduate work. I get reminders here and there of what went on in my childhood and teen years, but I have to keep reminding myself that's all in the past, and that I just have to keep moving on and living in the present.

That's really the only way I can function.
