There should always be a crucifix upon or near the altar during the celebration of Holy Mass. I would refer you to an excellent little book "The Spirit of the Liturgy" by Joseph Kardinal Ratziner. He discusses therein at some lenghth the importance of the crucifix during the celebration of the Mass. It is the very cross of Christ which is our focus.
