Chicken Little at Mass

Indeed the sky is falling!! But not for Catholics in the pews; rather for the power addicted leaders of the Church. And they don't have a clue. Already due to the ridiculous delay in publishing a new Sacramentary as well as that God Awful translation of the Lectionary that has been dumped on us, many presiders have become skilled in creating their own prayers and translations. I have attended a "mass" where even the entire Eucharistic Prayer apart from the historical narrative was an ad lib. Some new book is not going to change that practice now. Most especially not when the language of that book sounds like a bad overdubbing from a spagetti western movie. Truely our priests could do better, though they should make sure that if they are coming up with personal creations, these should be better and not worse than what we already have, but this is often not the case. The intended translations of the Missale Romanum Editio typico tertia as approved by several Bishops' conferences (in fact no conference that voted failed to approve that translation) but ultimately rejected by Cardinal Medina will likely serve as models when more pirate copies begin to circulate. The proposed rubrical changes are not likely to really concern anyone, not even those who say Mass on EWTN. Many of the proposed changes (like washing hands after footwashing or holding the host over the chalice at the Ecce Agnus Dei) are simply admitting what is already common practice, in violation of the existing rules. Already fewer Catholics are much concerned about going to Mass at all. Are we to suppose that suddenly anyone is going to care about micromanagement of posture? If anything, the Mass should be made more inviting, more understandable and more accessable. Apparently a small but strong ultra-conservative faction of the church's leadership would like to see us move ahead to the 15th century. Which is fine with me because that is where I would be happy to leave them. (Ignoremus Bulletin, you can roll over now).
