“The Eucharist is the
center of the Church's life. In it Christ offers himself to the Father
for our sake, making us sharers in his own sacrifice, and gives himself
to us as the bread of life for our journey on the highways of the world.”
— Pope John Paul II, Homily, 6/13/2004
Pope John Paul II announced a special Year of the Eucharist during
the Mass of the solemnity of Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 13, 2004. This
special year begins in October 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a World
Eucharistic Congress, and it will end in October 2005 in the Vatican at
the next Ordinary Synod of Bishops meeting on “The Eucharist as Source
and Summit of the Life and Mission of the Church.”
